Hi!
Let’s be honest: “New Year, New You” doesn’t work. That’s why I love taking a micro approach to life. 🧐
Every year, we start off with big dreams and vow that this is the year we finally do x, y, or z.
- We hit the gym hard, only to burn out by the second week of January.
- We start learning about money management, then realize how tough it is to change our habits.
- We pick up that book gathering dust on our shelf, only to give up after 10 pages.
By the time February rolls around, it feels like we’re living the same life as last year, and we feel like losers. Sound familiar? 🥲
I know. So let’s talk about the micro approach.
The real magic lies in taking tiny, consistent steps toward your big goal and celebrating those little wins along the way.
To show you what I mean, let’s look at my running journey. One day, I’d like to run a road marathon and an ultra in the Alps. That’s my big goal.
But I started small. Really small:
- I ran 1 kilometer once a week. My only job was to show up, run that single time, and head home proud of myself.
- Then I bumped it up to 2 km, then 3, then 5… and 1 run per week turned into 2 runs per week.
- Eventually, I worked up to half-marathons, and now I run three times a week.
- This summer, I hope to tackle my first UTMB-indexed race, inching even closer to my big dream. 🤩
If I had gone from couch to marathon like so many beginners on Instagram try to do, I would have quit. I’d get injured, discouraged, and end up hating running. 😒
Yes, the micro approach might seem boring and lack that flashy, aspirational vibe. But it’s what keeps you consistent.
We all hear that consistency is key, yet rarely do we talk about how to be consistent. Turns out, it’s those unsexy, unglamorous micro actions that build consistency. And that’s a hard sell for anyone chasing a magic pill. 🙄
So here’s to 2025 being the year we embrace the boring, the sustainable, the micro, and the consistent. Because that’s how we actually reach our goals. 🥹
Are you going to try this approach? Lemme know!
